Started by scientific visionaries in 1960, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) was designed as a place where researchers could come to interact and to share expertise, ideas and knowledge with their university colleagues -- a place where scientists could work together to solve the problems that threaten life on our planet (problems related to climate change, global warming, and the ozone layer, to name a few).
At the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, our employees go home at night feeling the satisfaction that comes from knowing that the work they do supports an important scientific mission. The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research is a nonprofit consortium of more than 100 North American member colleges and universities focused on research and training in the atmospheric and related Earth system sciences. UCAR manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research with sponsorship by the National Science Foundation. Through our community programs, UCAR supports and extends the capabilities of our academic consortium.
The National Center for Atmospheric Research provides research, observing and computing facilities, and a variety of services for the atmospheric and related Earth sciences community.
The NCAR Library serves and supports Atmospheric, Solar and Earth scientists and their research at NCAR and throughout the broader UCAR community.
